Just before Christmas I was approached by Patterns of Play to produce a cover illustration for the Norwich FC home programme. It was to be for their first game of 2018 with Millwall. Due to the Christmas shutdown the artwork had to be completed that week, giving me not long to get the job done. I love a tight deadline so I jumped at the challenge!
The brief for the cover was to celebrate the fans, and the illustration had to show a range of ages and characters. So I started by drawing dozens of fans that would typically come to watch a Norwich game. I then combined all the rough drawings on the computer into a layout to look like they were all in the stadium celebrating a goal.
Once the layout and fans were agreed I then re-drew the line drawing as a complete final artwork on a sheet of layout paper with a fountain pen.
By drawing all the linework together I ensured all the elements had the same line weight and worked as one image. Some people do this process on a computer, but for me I love drawing by hand and the honesty and craft of that process.
The final stage is adding colour, which I did using watercolours. These were painted on a separate sheet of paper I placed on top of the line drawing using a lightbox.
The final stage was to combine the line drawing and colour. I did this using a computer, carefully lining up the two elements together. Job done! Great to see the programme in print on the day, you can't beat the printed page and it was an honour to be given the opportunity to do this job, great way to start the year!
