I held my second solo exhibition ‘Drawn to the City’ at Studio 20, Norwich from the 6th-8th July 2018.
It was a collection of works celebrating Norwich through drawing on location. All of the artwork was created directly from life, in front of the subject. This way of working I feel captures the immediacy of the moment, with atmosphere and movement coming through in the work. The majority of the artworks were drawn in 2018.
Born from an initial idea to draw the whole city, these are the parts of Norwich that I know well and that mean something to me. Norwich has changed considerably over the years since I have known it as a young student in the late 90s. More buildings have appeared and independent businesses have flourished. I wanted to re-visit the places I used to spend time at, along with places I visit rarely, and see them with fresh eyes through drawing.
Alongside these works I exhibited my recent on location event drawings for the Norfolk & Norwich Festival. These were a selection of small scale pictures that I had drawn from the audience whilst attending events. They were then shared on their social media channels. It was great to show these as some had never been seen before – the originals especially.
As an additional challenge I completed a large scale live drawing over the course of the exhibition on a roll of paper I had fixed to the wall. I chose to draw a view down Bridewell Alley based on a few smaller sketches. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out, it’s always fun to work big – trick is to use a big pen! This piece is for sale – email me if you’re interested in a 8ft x 6ft approx picture!
Thanks for visiting if you did, I loved talking about my work with you and meeting people who bought prints and cards. It was a fun few days and a lovely space to occupy, so thanks to Studio 20. Thank you to Elin, friends and family for their support during the run up to the exhibition, it was quite an undertaking, but well worth it. I look forward to my next one!
If you would like to buy prints or originals from the exhibition I will be uploading prints on to my online shop over July, and for originals please email me and I can provide a price.
